University of Ibadan Students Protest Massive Fee Increase

Tensions are running high at the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, as students have begun protesting against a significant increase in their school fees. The protest started in the early hours of Friday, with students expressing their dissatisfaction over the hefty price tag.

According to reports, the governing council of the institution approved the fee increase during a meeting held on Thursday. As a result, students are now expected to pay N138,350 for the new academic session, a massive increase of over one hundred percent from the previous year’s N58,000.

Students from the Department of Human Nutrition and Department of Animal Science spoke with Media Talk Africa, revealing the shocking increases in their fees. "In our department, Human Nutrition, we paid N58,000 last session, but now we’re expected to pay N138,350," said a student. Another student from the Department of Animal Science added, "We paid N70,000 last session, but now it’s increased to N150,000. Most of us haven’t seen the money, and we can’t attend lectures until the fees are reduced."

The students have boycotted their classes and are actively enforcing the closure of all lecture halls until their demands are met. The protesters believe that the massive fee increase will place an unfair burden on many students and their families, making higher education unaffordable for many.

A photograph taken during the protest, captured the intensity of the students’ anger and frustration. The image shows a sea of students, all united in their desire to fight against the unjust fee increase.

The University of Ibadan is yet to respond to the protests, but it’s clear that the students will not back down until their demands are met. The fate of the academic session hangs in the balance, as the students continue to fight for their rights.
