Renowned afrobeats musician, Rema, has been awarded a prestigious royal plaque by the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to promoting the state and legacy of the ancient Benin empire.
The plaque presentation ceremony took place at the Oba’s palace in Benin City, on Thursday, ahead of Rema’s upcoming homecoming concert at the Ogbe Stadium in the city. The concert is scheduled to be held at the newly named Rema Dome, a 6,000-capacity arena that was unveiled by the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on Wednesday during the groundbreaking ceremony.
Rema, born Divine Ikubor, hails from Benin City and has been a proud ambassador of Edo State. Through his music and concerts, he has consistently showcased his love and appreciation for the city and the empire’s rich cultural heritage.
One of Rema’s latest songs, "Benin Boys," featuring fellow Edo-born artist, Shallipopi, is a tribute to the city of Benin.
