Ogun APC Chieftain Denies Imposing Councilorship Candidates

Akintunde Armstrong, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, has vehemently denied reports that he plans to impose councilorship candidates for Iperu Wards 3 and 5 in Ikenne Local Government Area.

According to a report on Thursday, Armstrong was alleged to have boasted of using cash and influence to impose his loyalists, Olaleye Babatunde and Osularu Olabanjo Muyiwa, as councilorship candidates for the party in the November 16 local government elections. The report also claimed that Armstrong boasted that even Governor Dapo Abiodun, who is from one of these wards, could not stop him from going ahead with the alleged imposition.

However, Armstrong took to the media on Friday to deny ever making such claims. He described the report as "the ranting of rudderless opposition to tarnish my image, misinform the public, and score cheap political points."

Armstrong questioned the logic of someone boasting about spending a staggering sum of $80,000 to impose councilorship candidates, especially in a harsh economic environment. He also dismissed the claim that he boasted that even the governor cannot stop him, stating that Governor Abiodun is his leader and mentor.

The APC chieftain explained that the video in circulation was actually discussing the funds earmarked by the Dapo Abiodun Continuity Agenda to support and empower party members, just as the political group has been doing since its establishment in 2019.

Armstrong reiterated his loyalty to the governor and the party, promising to support the party in producing the right candidates and helping the ruling party achieve a landslide victory in the forthcoming local government elections.

It remains to be seen how this controversy will play out, but for now, Armstrong’s denial has cast doubt on the validity of the original report.
