Nigeria’s Healthy Diet Costs Rise 1.9% in July 2024
A recent report by the National Bureau Statistics reveals that the average cost of a healthy diet in Nigeria has increased by 1.9% in July 2024, reaching a staggering N1,265 per adult per day. This marks a significant jump from the N1,241 recorded in June 2024.
The data also shows a stark regional divide, with the South West region experiencing the highest average cost of N1,581 per adult per day, compared to N956 in the North West. The report clarifies that this figure represents a “lower bound” or “floor” cost, excluding transportation and meal preparation expenses.
Interestingly, the cost of a healthy diet in Nigeria has been rising faster than both general inflation and food inflation in recent months. Headline inflation and food inflation stood at 33.40% and 39.53%, respectively, in July 2024.
As the cost of living continues to rise, Nigerians may need to adjust their eating habits or explore alternative options to ensure a balanced diet within their means. With inflation rates remaining high, it remains to be seen how this development will impact the daily lives of citizens.
