PDP Chieftain Accuses Party Leadership of Discrimination Against Women

In a recent development, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in Ekiti State, Mrs Folasade Akinrinmola, has alleged discrimination against women in the composition of caretaker committee members for the party in the state. The former chairman of Gbonyin Local Government Area made the allegation in a statement released on Saturday, reacting to the list of the 19-member caretaker committee composed by the PDP National Working Committee on Friday.

The list, chaired by Dare Adeleke, includes only two women – Mrs Moji Omotoso and Mrs Abeni Olayinka – among its 19 members. Akinrinmola accused the party leadership of failing to do due diligence in selecting the committee members, which she claims is a clear case of discrimination against women.

"I am surprised to see a list full of men with only two women," Akinrinmola said. "What are they trying to tell the women who had stood by the party in difficult times? Are they saying women are no longer relevant in the party? Even if they claim not to know the credentials of active women in Ekiti, can’t they consult some of us who had led the party before?"

The former council chairman urged the PDP national leadership to withdraw the list and make necessary amendments to reflect the true image of the party as being representative of all. She also called for the inclusion of six females in the list to give women a sense of belonging in the party without further delay.

Failure to correct the anomaly, according to Akinrinmola, can dampen the spirit of women in the party or force them to quit. Her statement has sparked controversy and debate within the party, with many calling for greater representation and inclusivity.
