Activist Lawyer Demands Release of Journalist Arrested for Insulting Kano State Governor

In a bold move, activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju has called for the immediate release of journalist Muktar Dahiru, who was arrested and imprisoned for allegedly insulting Kano State Governor Yusuf Abba on Facebook.

Adeyanju, a prominent human rights advocate, condemned the arrest and imprisonment of Dahiru, saying it was a blatant attack on press freedom and an attempt to silence critics. He argued that the use of criminal defamation laws to stifle dissenting voices is unacceptable and undermines Nigeria’s democratic principles.

According to reports, Dahiru was arrested and imprisoned after he posted an insult on Facebook about the Kano State Governor. However, Adeyanju believes that the journalist’s right to free speech was being curtailed, and that the authorities should drop all charges against him.

"The Kano State Government’s actions are a clear attempt to silence critics and undermine the role of the media in holding those in power accountable," Adeyanju said in a statement. "A free press is the cornerstone of democracy, and journalists play a vital role in exposing corruption and promoting transparency. I urge the authorities to immediately release Dahiru and drop all charges against him."

Adeyanju’s call for the release of Dahiru has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for the protection of press freedom in Nigeria. The incident has also raised concerns about the country’s criminal defamation laws, which many believe are being used to suppress dissenting voices.

As the debate continues, one thing is clear: the arrest and imprisonment of Dahiru is a serious threat to press freedom in Nigeria, and Adeyanju’s demand for his release is a crucial step towards upholding the fundamental rights of journalists to practice their profession without fear of persecution.
