Nigeria on Brink of Collapse: Afenifere Calls on Federal Government to Save the Country
A prominent Pan-Yoruba group, Afenifere, has issued a stern warning to the Federal Government of Nigeria, expressing deep concern over the nation’s downward spiral since the administration of President Bola Tinubu took office. According to the group, Nigeria is on the brink of collapse, with widespread hardship, hunger, insecurity, inflation, and massive unemployment plaguing the country.
In a recent communique, Afenifere’s Deputy Leader, Oladipo Olaitan, and Deputy Secretary General, Alade Rotimi-John, highlighted the administration’s reckless spending habits, citing the purchase of an Airbus A330 jet for the President, worth $100m or N240 billion, as well as N950m each for new armoured Cadillac Escalade Limousine SUVs for the President.
The group also criticized the government’s profligate spending on renovating a new mansion for the Vice President, as well as the allocation of N90 billion for religious pilgrimage and N10 billion for the renovation of the Presidential Lodge at Ribadu Road, Lagos. These lavish expenditures, Afenifere argues, reflect a wasteful nature of the administration and have contributed to Nigeria’s economic woes.
Afenifere expressed outrage over the government’s inability to address the country’s pressing issues, saying it has failed to demonstrate a sense of purpose or long-term vision in its handling of public revenue. The group accused the government of resorting to diversionary tactics to silence critics and obscure its inefficiencies.
"We are scandalized by the odium and poor international image that has attended these profligate expenditures," the group stated. "We are puzzled that a government can be so masterful at diversionary tactics just to lull the people to sleep and confuse them as they wake amid grave national circumstances and a strident debate of its desultory or unmethodical handling of governance."
The Nigerian people, Afenifere emphasized, are deeply troubled by the state of the nation, which has left them worse off than at the beginning of the administration. The group is calling on the Federal Government to take immediate action to address the country’s challenges and save Nigeria from collapse.
In a powerful statement, Afenifere underscored the gravity of the situation, emphasizing that Nigeria is on the verge of collapse and requires urgent intervention to stabilize its economy and restore confidence in the government.
