Priest Warns Nigerians to Prioritize Safety During ‘Ember Months’
As September begins, a Catholic missionary priest, Fr Kelvin Ugwu, has advised Nigerians to prioritize their safety, particularly during the "ember months" (September, October, November, and December). Ugwu, who works in Gambia, emphasized the importance of vehicle maintenance, responsible driving, and adherence to safety regulations to avoid accidents and blood-sucking demons.
The priest’s statement comes at a time when many Nigerians still believe that the "ember months" are associated with heightened risks, including road accidents, due to superstitious practices known as "juju" operations. However, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has repeatedly dispelled this notion, but many still hold on to the belief.
In a post on his Facebook page, Ugwu listed five essential tips to avoid exposing oneself to danger during the "ember months":
- Oil: Make sure to change your vehicle’s oil, check the brakes, and replace the shock absorber if necessary. Also, check the car coolant to ensure it’s functioning properly.
- Tyre: Don’t compromise on your car tyres. Bald tyres are a recipe for disaster. Ensure they are in good condition to support the vehicle’s load and maintain traction.
- Alcohol: If you must drink, don’t drive. If you must drive, don’t drink. Alcohol consumption is a major cause of road accidents.
- Seatbelt: Always wear your seatbelt. If you think the distance is too short for a seatbelt, it’s likely too short for driving. Consider trekking instead.
- Speeding: The road is not an athletic ground. Avoid speeding and the temptation to compete with other drivers. Speed kills, and there’s no medal for the driver who overtook every vehicle on the way.
By following these simple yet crucial tips, Nigerians can reduce their risk of accidents and ensure a safer driving experience during the "ember months".
