Sinner and Paul Face Off in US Open Quarter-Final Showdown

World number one Jannik Sinner will look to take a step closer to claiming his first US Open title when he faces American Tommy Paul in the round of 16 on Monday. The Italian ace has been warmly received by New York fans, despite some controversy surrounding his two positive drugs tests in March. Paul, meanwhile, can expect a lively crowd to be backing him on the US Labor Day holiday.

Sinner has a 2-1 head-to-head advantage over Paul, including their only hard-court encounter in Toronto last year. The Italian has navigated the early rounds of the tournament with ease, moving into the round of 16 for the sixth consecutive year. Paul, who has been impressive in the second week of the tournament, will need to draw on all his experience to take down the world number one.

In other matches to watch on day eight of the tournament, Daniil Medvedev will face Portugal’s Nuno Borges, while in the women’s draw, top seed Iga Swiatek will be looking to secure a quarter-final spot alongside Jasmine Paolini, Jessica Pegula, and former world number one Caroline Wozniacki.

Wozniacki, who is chasing her first title since retiring in 2019, has reached the fourth round without dropping a set. This will be her third time in a row that she has put together three straight victories, having also reached the round of 16 at Flushing Meadows last year.

In an all-Aussie battle, Alex de Minaur will face Jordan Thompson, with both players looking to make the quarter-finals. Thompson has had an impressive run so far, having dispatched number seven seed Hubert Hurkacz and number 30 Matteo Arnaldi in the second and third rounds respectively. De Minaur, who has reached the second week of all four majors this year, will need to be at his best to take down his fellow Australian.

The tournament, which will conclude on September 8, has already seen some surprise exits, including those of defending champion Novak Djokovic and former winner Carlos Alcaraz. Despite the upsets, there is still plenty of excitement to be had as the remaining players battle it out for a place in the quarter-finals.
