Kenyan Man Extradited to Face Murder Charges in Massachusetts
A Kenyan man, Kevin Adam Kinyanjui Kangethe, has been extradited to the United States to face murder charges nearly a year after he fled the country. Kangethe is accused of killing his girlfriend, Margaret Mbitu, whose body was found in a car at Logan International Airport in Boston on October 31.
According to authorities, Kangethe left Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, on Sunday and is set to face murder charges at Suffolk Superior Court in Boston on Tuesday. Kenyan Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Ingonga expressed his commitment to supporting the prosecution team in the case.
The extradition order was issued by the court in July, and Kangethe has renounced his U.S. citizenship. He was involved in a dramatic escape from a police cell in January after his Kenyan lawyer visited him, but was rearrested a week later and his extradition case continued.
Mbitu, a health care aide in Halifax, Massachusetts, was last seen leaving work on October 30 and reported missing by her family. The preliminary investigation showed that she had left her workplace and traveled with Kangethe to Lowell, Massachusetts, where he lived. Kangethe was also found in possession of personal items belonging to the deceased.
The extradition of Kangethe marks a significant milestone in the case, and it is expected that he will face justice for the alleged murder of his girlfriend.
