Emir Sanusi II Offers to Intervene in Fulani Crisis in Nigeria, Seeks Government Support
The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has expressed his willingness to play a mediatory role in resolving the ongoing Fulani crisis in Nigeria. Speaking to the leadership of a Fulani group, Tapital Pulaku Njode Jam Nigeria, at his palace on Tuesday, the Emir emphasized the need for a permanent solution to the crisis and sought the government’s support in achieving his mission.
Emir Sanusi II called on the government to take concrete steps to address the Fulani people’s sufferings, citing heavy attacks, isolation, killing, and destruction as well as the rustling of their cows. He acknowledged that there are also "bad eggs" amongst the Fulanis who have caused harm to themselves and others, but argued that the government and Fulanis must work together to resolve the crisis, particularly with farmers and others who are suspected of involvement in crimes.
The leader of the Fulani group, Madibo Jada, welcomed the Emir’s willingness to intervene, stating that his group was mainly comprised of people from the bushes and that many of them are scattered across the 36 states of Nigeria. Jada believes that the Emir has the authority to correct their battered image and set the record straight about their contributions to Nigeria’s socio-economic development.
In his proposal, Emir Sanusi II has indicated his willingness to work closely with the government to provide a lasting solution to the Fulani crisis. If accepted, this could pave the way for a fresh start between the Fulani people and the government, ultimately bringing an end to the sufferings of both parties. The international community will be keenly watching how this proposal unfolds, with hopes of a peaceful and prosperous future for all parties involved.
