Ensuring Accessibility for People with Disabilities in Nigeria’s Upcoming Election

A Non-Governmental Organisation, TAF Africa, has teamed up with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to guarantee that people with disabilities (PWDs) can exercise their right to vote without obstacles in the November 16 state governorship election in Ondo State, Nigeria. The collaboration aims to ensure that PWDs can not only vote but also stand for election on the day.

At a recent Able2Vote and voter education event for physically challenged individuals in Ondo State, TAF Africa’s Programme Manager, Mr. Adeolu Kilanko, emphasized the need for major stakeholders, particularly INEC, to address the numerous challenges PWDs face during elections. These challenges include lack of access to polling booths placed at elevated positions, making it difficult for individuals in wheelchairs to access such polling units. For persons with albinism, the struggle to see the print on ballot papers is another major hurdle.

Kilanko commended INEC for the improved conduct of elections outlined in the 2023 electoral guide and recommended solutions based on issues recorded in the 2023 general election. He encouraged PWDs to participate in the upcoming governorship election and revealed that TAF Africa had applied for 50 disability observers, with 20 approved.

The Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD) Chairman, Mr. Abiodun Samuel, praised the voter education event, stating that it would significantly help their members avoid disenfranchisement. He also called on INEC to improve accessibility to election materials for PWDs.

Representing INEC at the event, Desk Officer for Gender/Inclusivity, Mrs. Ngozi Edet, reassured PWDs that INEC had made adequate provisions to facilitate their voting in the election. She encouraged PWDs to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and assured them that there were sufficient arrangements for easy collection at designated centres. However, she advised against visiting the centres during peak hours.

TAF Africa’s collaboration with INEC is a crucial step towards ensuring that PWDs can fully exercise their right to participate in the democratic process. With this partnership, Nigeria is taking a significant step towards promoting inclusivity and accessibility in its electoral system.
