Rivers State Welcomes New Commander to Boost Oil and Gas Security

Nigeria has welcomed a new commandant to lead the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Rivers State. Joachim Okafor took the reins on Thursday, following a handover ceremony at the command’s headquarters in Port Harcourt.

According to the command’s spokesman, Olufemi Ayodele, Okafor succeeded Mr Igwebueze, who has been redeployed. Okafor has been tasked with overseeing operations to combat illegal bunkering and pipeline vandalism in the state.

The new commander’s credentials are impressive. He previously served as the NSCDC commandant in Niger State, earning him praise from his superiors. At the handover ceremony, NSCDC Zone L Commander, Mr Ayinla Olowo, described Okafor as an experienced, dedicated, and resourceful officer. Olowo expressed confidence in Okafor’s ability to enhance security for the nation’s oil and gas infrastructure.

Okafor addressed NSCDC operatives, promising to work towards restoring the integrity of the security outfit in Rivers. He emphasized the importance of protecting critical oil and gas infrastructure, which is the lifeblood of the nation’s economy. To achieve this, Okafor vowed to collaborate with various stakeholders, including the government, sister security agencies, community leaders, civil society organizations, youths, and the media.

“We will work together to combat crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism,” Okafor said. “This robust collaboration will help mitigate environmental degradation and other associated crimes in Rivers State.”

Okafor’s appointment is a step towards bolstering security in Rivers State, a key player in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. The state’s security apparatus is expected to benefit from the commander’s experience and expertise in addressing the growing menace of oil theft and vandalism.

With Okafor at the helm, residents and businesses in Rivers State can expect enhanced security measures to safeguard the region’s oil and gas infrastructure.
