Nigerian Government Denies Paid Bandits, Vows to Continue Anti-Criminality Efforts
Zamfara State Government, in Nigeria, has debunked reports suggesting it made massive payments to bandit leaders in exchange for peaceful talks. The government said the documents circulating on social media, bearing the name of the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Nakwada, were forged and misrepresented.
Nakwada addressed journalists in Gusau on Thursday, dismissing the documents as “fake, mischievous, and malicious.” He revealed that the security agencies had been properly informed and were working to trace the source of the rumors. The official also rubbished claims that media promoters received payments from the state’s Security Trust Fund under the guise of reconciliation efforts.
Nakwada emphasized that the state government has consistently maintained a firm stance against negotiating with bandits and terrorists, stating that the administration prioritizes the safety and well-being of its citizens.
“We will not negotiate with terrorists. Our administration is guided by integrity, accountability, and a commitment to providing peace and order,” said Nakwada.
According to the SSG, the state government has been working diligently to combat the menace of banditry, employing strategic measures in a bid to restore order.
The fabricated document is not only distracting but an attempt to erode public trust in the administration and its efforts to rescue and rebuild the state.
Nakwada highlighted the importance of transparency in addressing the matter, affirming that the state would not be swayed from its commitment to eradicating criminality. He called on the people to remain vigilant and cooperate with the authorities in the war against banditry.
