Telegram CEO Ready to Exit Markets Not Compatible with Principles
In a recent statement, Pavel Durov, the Chief Executive Officer of Telegram, revealed that the platform is prepared to exit any markets that are not compatible with its principles. This announcement comes after Durov’s arrest at Le Bourget Airport in Paris on August 24, 2024, where he was detained by the French government over allegations that Telegram facilitated criminal activities.
Durov emphasized that the platform is not driven by financial gain, but rather by the intention to bring good and defend the basic rights of people, particularly in places where these rights are violated. He criticized the use of outdated laws to charge a CEO with crimes committed by third parties on the platform, calling it a misguided approach.
Telegram is currently banned in Russia and Iran, citing the need for a balance between privacy and security. Durov also highlighted the importance of protecting innovators from personal responsibility for potential abuse of their tools. He stated that no innovator will build new tools if they know they will be held personally responsible for potential abuse.
The Telegram CEO also emphasized that the platform is already taking steps to weed out criminals from its platform. This announcement comes as a response to the growing concerns over the use of technology for criminal activities.
As the world grapples with the challenges of balancing privacy and security, Durov’s statement serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting the rights of individuals and innovators. With Telegram’s commitment to upholding its principles, the platform is poised to continue playing a significant role in shaping the future of technology and communication.
