Nigeria’s Petroleum Filling Station Workers Demand Fair Compensation Amidst Rising Fuel Prices

In a recent press conference in Kaduna State, Nigeria, Petroleum Filling Station Workers (PSW) expressed frustration over their stagnant and meager salaries despite multiple Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) price hikes. The workers, who earn between N10,000 and N20,000 per month, are demanding recognition and organization under the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers.

Ibrahim Zango, spokesperson for PSW, lamented that the workers are treated like slaves despite their crucial role in the nation’s economy. “Despite our vital role in the economy, we are treated like slaves. Our salaries are meager, and we face dangers such as toxic environments and fire hazards without adequate healthcare,” he said.

The call for recognition and organization comes as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited Retail outlets increased its petrol pump price to N897 and N855 per liter from N617 on Tuesday. This marks the latest in a series of price hikes, following a N545 to N238 per liter increase in June last year after the fuel subsidy removal.

The PSW’s demands are not unfounded, given the hazardous working conditions and meager compensation they receive. With salaries ranging from N10,000 to N20,000 per month, the workers struggle to make ends meet, let alone provide for their families.

The Nigerian government and petroleum companies must take heed of the PSW’s pleas and address the glaring inequalities. By recognizing the vital role these workers play in the economy and providing fair compensation, the government can help alleviate the suffering of these dedicated employees.

As the fuel price continues to rise, it is essential that the Nigerian government prioritizes the welfare of its workers, particularly those in the petroleum sector. Only through fair compensation and recognition can the government demonstrate its commitment to the well-being of its citizens.
