Nigerian Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye Eyes UEFA Champions League and FIFA World Cup Success
Maduka Okoye, the 24-year-old Udinese goalkeeper, has expressed his desire to play in both the UEFA Champions League and FIFA World Cup. The shot stopper has made a strong comeback to the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, after a short absence.
Okoye’s impressive displays for Udinese have caught the eye of the national team selectors, and he is now eager to help the Super Eagles secure a place at the 2026 World Cup finals. Currently, the team sits fifth in Group D of the CAF World Cup qualification with just three points from four games.
In an interview with Italian Football Podcast, Okoye acknowledged the tough fight ahead, but remained optimistic about the team’s chances. “Yeah, like you said, we are in a difficult situation right now. But when we all meet up in the national team camp, it’s a great vibe—family vibes. I’m sure that we will get to our goal,” he said.
Okoye also expressed his excitement about the team’s new coach, stating, “We have a new coach, so we are looking forward to what’s coming. It would mean the world [to play for Nigeria at the World Cup].”
The Nigerian goalkeeper is also dreaming of playing in the UEFA Champions League, a competition he believes is the ultimate target for any footballer. “For sure, to one day play in the Champions League. I mean, this is what we dream of growing up; this is the number one target,” he said.
However, Okoye recognizes the importance of taking things step by step and is willing to put in the hard work required to achieve his goals. “I know I have to take things step by step; I have to work on a lot of things. But I also know that I can be there, so that’s why we all work hard,” he emphasized.
With his determination and passion for the sport, Maduka Okoye is certainly a player to watch as the Super Eagles bid to qualify for the 2026 World Cup and potentially make a deep run in the UEFA Champions League.
