In a candid interview with Vanity Fair, pop star Selena Gomez shared her personal struggles with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that has impacted her life in significant ways. The singer, who has been open about her health issues since 2013, revealed that her battle with the disease has made it impossible for her to carry her own children.
Gomez, 29, spoke about the devastating news, saying, “I haven’t ever said this, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children. I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.” The “Good for You” singer expressed her disappointment and sense of loss, but revealed that she has since come to terms with her new reality.
In the same interview, Gomez discussed the reality of her health issues and how they have shifted her expectations of starting a family. She explained, “It’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it. I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone. But I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me.”
Gomez also talked about her recent journey towards finding love and building a family. She revealed that before meeting her current boyfriend, she was single for five years and had limited experience with dating. However, she realized that family is the most important thing to her, and she is now excited about the prospect of building a family, albeit in a different way.
The “Lose You to Love Me” singer expressed optimism about the future, stating, “I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby.” Her words demonstrate a sense of acceptance and hope, despite the challenges she has faced.
It’s worth noting that Gomez has been fortunate to have a supportive friend like Francia Raisa, who donated a kidney to her in 2017. The singer’s experiences have undoubtedly taught her to cherish the relationships and options available to her, including surrogacy and adoption.
