Flooding Crisis Hits Maiduguri, Thousands Displaced

Flood Devastation Hits Maiduguri and Yobe States in Nigeria

In a shocking turn of events, thousands of residents in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, and parts of Jere local government area have been left stranded and displaced due to the collapse of the dyke and overflow of Alau Dam. The dam, located about 10 kilometers away from the metropolis, has been causing chaos since Monday evening.

The state government, led by Secretary to the Government Bukar Tijjani, had reassured the public that there was no cause for alarm or panic, citing measures to mitigate any disaster. However, the water flow into the city has continued unabated, consuming many communities, including the Shehu’s palace, Monday Market, Post Office area, Gwange, Moromoro Customs Bridge, Zoo, and Bulabullin.

Meanwhile, in Yobe state, only five local government areas remain accessible to Damaturu, the state capital. These include Nangere, Potiskum, Fika, Fune, and Gujba. The other 12 local government areas, including Nguru, Jakusco, Gashua, Gaidam, and many more, have been totally cut off due to the devastating flooding. The destruction has resulted in the loss of bridges, roads, houses, and property worth billions of naira.

In a statement, ASP Kenneth Daso, Police Public Relations Officer, Borno State Command, advised citizens to avoid flooding routes and stay in safer areas, as the police and other relevant government agencies are working to ensure the safety of lives and property.

The situation is dire, and the affected residents are in dire need of assistance. As the situation unfolds, it is crucial that the government and relief agencies work together to provide aid and support to those affected by this natural disaster.
