Flood Devastates Maiduguri, Nigeria: President Tinubu Calls for Evacuation and Aid
A devastating flood has struck Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state in northeastern Nigeria, leaving thousands of residents displaced and several facilities affected. President Bola Tinubu has expressed concern over the disaster and extended condolences to the government and people of the state, particularly to families who have lost their means of livelihood.
According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the flood was triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam, which has resulted in the displacement of thousands of residents and damage to critical facilities such as the Post office and the Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
The President has called for the immediate evacuation of people from affected areas, urging relevant authorities to assess the damage and provide assistance to those in need. Onanuga stated that Tinubu assured Governor Babagana Zulum that the Federal Government is ready to collaborate with the state to address the immediate humanitarian needs of the affected people.
The President has also ordered the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to assist the flood victims and remains committed to mobilizing federal resources to support the state during this difficult time. As the situation unfolds, it is clear that a coordinated effort will be necessary to provide relief and support to those affected by this disaster.
The people of Maiduguri and the state of Borno are facing a challenging time, and it is essential that the government and humanitarian organizations work together to provide aid and support. The international community is also encouraged to lend its support to the affected areas, as the people of Nigeria face this natural disaster.
