Climate Change Mitigation Efforts in The Gambia: Peace360 Initiative Plants Over 200 Trees
In a bid to combat the devastating effects of climate change, the Peace360 Initiative- The Gambia has embarked on an annual tree-planting exercise, with a recent planting of over 200 trees in Jarra Soma, Lower River Region (LRR). The initiative aims to provide a conducive environment for the inhabitants of the region, which is grappling with the severe impacts of climate change.
The trees were planted in various locations, including Jarra Soma Upper Basic and Senior Secondary School, Soma Area Council, Soma Community Radio Station, and Soma Health Centre. According to Mariama Sallah, the Country Representative cum Global Programs Coordinator of Peace360 Initiative- The Gambia, the tree planting exercises have a significant impact on the environment and the community experiencing the effects of climate change.
Reforestation exercises, like the one carried out by Peace360 Initiative, help to mitigate climate challenges that pose great concern to rural communities in the country. Sallah expressed hope that her organization will play a role in mitigating the impact of climate change on the community.
The Principal of Jarra Soma Upper Basic School, Mr. Jarju, commended the Peace360 Initiative for its commendable effort. He encouraged the organization to continue its mitigation strategy through tree planting exercises and praised the initiative’s service to the community. Jarju also urged more youths to engage in community service, emphasizing the importance of collective action in addressing the challenges posed by climate change.
