Viral Breakdancer Raygun Crowned World’s No. 1 B-Girl Amid Controversy

Breaking News: Australia’s Raygun named No. 1 B-Girl in the world by WDSF despite viral Olympic performance

The World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) has sparked controversy by naming Australian breakdancer Rachael "Raygun" Gunn as the No. 1 B-Girl in the world. Raygun rose to international fame during the Paris Olympics, but her unorthodox style and lack of points led to widespread mockery. Yet, despite her viral fail, Raygun has snatched the top spot in the WDSF’s Breaking World Ranking List, leaving many to question the organization’s credibility.

Raygun’s ascent to the top spot is attributed to the WDSF’s unusual ranking system, which was disrupted by the Olympic qualifying events. The suspension of ranking events allowed competitors to focus on qualifying, resulting in a limited number of events contributing to Raygun’s ranking. Despite earning fewer points overall than Riko Tsuhako from Japan, Raygun’s 1000 points from the Oceania Breaking Championships carried more weight due to its higher level of competition.

However, the WDSF’s decision has drawn criticism, with many questioning the organization’s suitability to govern breaking. The WDSF’s roots are in competitive ballroom dancing, sparking accusations of cultural insensitivity and a lack of credibility in the breaking community.

Raygun’s ranking may be short-lived, as her points from the Oceania Breaking Championships will expire at the end of October, coinciding with another competition in Shanghai. The WDSF acknowledges that the current rankings are not a true reflection of the global competitive landscape, urging fans to consider results from recent global Breaking competitions for a more accurate picture.

In a recent interview, Raygun defended her Olympic performance, attributing criticism to a lack of familiarity with breaking. When asked if she is the best breakdancer in Australia, Raygun confidently believes her record speaks for itself.

Despite the controversy surrounding her ranking, Raygun remains unapologetic about her style, asserting that different approaches to breaking are valid. However, the general public remains unconvinced, and it may take time for breakdancing to shake off the association with Australian university lecturers kangaroo hopping at the Olympics.

The saga highlights the ongoing debate between the WDSF and the breaking community, which has been ongoing since the organization’s inception. It remains to be seen if the WDSF’s decision will have a lasting impact on the sport.
