Nigeria’s Federal Government Unveils National Values Charter to Foster Cultural and Ethical Reawakening

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a national initiative aimed at instilling moral, ethical, and cultural values among Nigerians. The National Values Charter was declared open by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during an expanded retreat of the National Orientation Agency (NOA).

The charter, one of the flagship initiatives of the Minister’s ministry through NOA, is designed to foster a sense of shared values and perspectives among Nigerians, ensuring that citizens and the government are equally aware of their rights and responsibilities.

According to the minister, the charter is "carefully crafted" to educate Nigerians on their constitutional rights and obligations. The initiative also seeks to promote unity, inclusivity, and national harmony. "We want to ensure that our citizens and government at all levels have deep mutual love and respect for each other," Minister Idris emphasized.

In a significant move to enhance public awareness and engagement, NOA has prioritized technology, leveraging innovative platforms like the Mobiliser App, Artificial Intelligence, and Television and Radio Studios to promote civic awareness and feedback. The agency’s Director General, Lanre Issa-Onilu, highlighted the importance of leveraging technology to scale up public engagement and feedback.

As part of the charter’s implementation, NOA has also launched several engagement platforms, including the Explainer newsletter, to ensure timely information dissemination and community feedback.

The initiative has gained the support of former NOA Director Generals, including Prof. Jerry Gana, Dr Tonnie Iredia, Alhaji Idi Faruk, Mr Mike Omeri, and Dr Garba Abari.

This bold initiative underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to reawakening and transforming Nigeria’s cultural landscape. By promoting shared values, inclusive dialogue, and technologically-driven engagement, the National Values Charter holds tremendous potential for fostering national harmony and progress.
