Labour Party Caretaker Committee Demands Julius Abure’s Resignation as National Chairman

In a stern warning, the Labour Party, LP, Caretaker Committee in Abuja has urged Julius Abure to step down as the national chairman of the party, citing the expiration of his tenure on June 9. The committee made this announcement during a news conference in Abuja, led by Salisu Mohammed, the Secretary of the Board of Trustees.

Mohammed revealed that the decision was reached at a Umuahia stakeholder meeting by the Nenadi Usman-led Caretaker Committee, which was deemed lawful and legitimate. He emphasized that the committee engaged and mobilized all relevant stakeholders to restore the party’s integrity and reputation, which had been tarnished by Abure’s alleged illegality and corruption.

Abure took office as national chairman after the sudden death of Abdulkadir Abdulsalam in 2000, but has since led the party without an election. INEC, the Independent National Electoral Commission, had previously asked him to vacate the chair meant for the Chairman of the Labour Party.

The National Transitional Committee, facilitated by the Nigerian Labour Congress as the Trustee of the Labour Party, has fully accepted and commended the decision of the National Executive Committee, NEC, of the Labour Party at its meeting on September 4, 2024. The committee supports the 29-man Caretaker Committee’s efforts to prepare and conduct democratic congresses to elect party leadership at the Ward, LGA, State, and National levels.

According to Mohammed, the NEC organized by Governor Alex Otti of Abia is the most welcome intervention needed to save the party from alleged illegalities. The committee’s demand for Abure’s resignation comes as a major blow to his leadership, and it remains to be seen how the party will move forward without him at the helm.
