Edo’s Governorship Election: INEC Grants Three-Day Extension for PVC Collection

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has extended the deadline for collecting Permanent Voter Cards, PVCs, in Edo state ahead of the September 21 governorship election. The commission announced that the cards will be available for collection until September 15, after stakeholders appealed for an extension to enable more voters to collect their cards.

The decision was made following an interactive meeting between INEC and stakeholders in Benin, including chairmen of political parties, candidates, traditional and religious leaders, security agencies, civil society organizations, and the media. At the meeting, INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu and Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun addressed concerns and responded to queries from stakeholders.

The extension, which will begin on September 13, will give voters three extra days to collect their PVCs at one of the 18 local government offices across the state, from 9 am to 5 pm daily.

INEC National Commissioner, Sam Olumekun, made the announcement, citing the stakeholders’ appeal for the extension. He emphasized that the commission was committed to ensuring a free and fair election, and that this move would help achieve that goal.

With this development, voters in Edo state now have more time to collect their PVCs and exercise their right to vote in the upcoming governorship election.
