South African Government Minister Pravin Gordhan Dies at 75
Pravin Gordhan, a long-time member of the African National Congress party and a former government minister, has passed away at the age of 75. Gordhan died peacefully in hospital surrounded by his family, closest friends, and comrades in the liberation struggle.
According to his family, Gordhan had been hospitalized for a week before his death. President Cyril Ramaphosa paid tribute to the late minister, describing him as an “outstanding leader” whose unassuming persona belied his depth of intellect, integrity, and energy.
Gordhan’s political career spanned many years, starting from his teenage years when he joined the struggle against apartheid. He was one of the negotiators for South Africa’s peaceful transition to a constitutional democracy and became a member of parliament in 1994 after Nelson Mandela became the country’s first democratically elected president.
Throughout his career, Gordhan held various positions in government, including minister of public enterprises from 2018 to 2024, finance minister from 2009 to 2014 and again from 2015 to 2017, and head of the South Africa Revenue Services from 1999 to 2009. During his tenure, he was credited with transforming the revenue service into a world-class tax and customs agency.
Gordhan was also an outspoken critic of corruption in government and state-owned enterprises, and was one of the ministers who criticized the leadership of former President Jacob Zuma while he was still serving in his Cabinet.
Gordhan’s legacy will be remembered for his commitment to fighting against apartheid and his dedication to public service. His passing is a significant loss for South Africa and the international community, and he will be deeply missed by those who knew him and worked with him.
