Ogun State Electoral Commission Pledges Credible Local Government Elections
As Nigeria’s November 16 local government elections approach, the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) has reaffirmed its commitment to providing equal opportunities for political parties. In a media engagement on Friday, Chairman Babatunde Osibodu emphasized the commission’s dedication to conducting credible polls.
Osibodu emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue and feedback between the commission and political parties, as well as observing party primaries, to ensure seamless elections. He reiterated the commission’s pledge towards conducting credible polls, stating, "If the process is seen to be fair, if the process is seen to be credible, if the process is seen to be transparent, then I have done my job. The results do not depend on the Commission but on the voters."
The chairman also highlighted the commission’s efforts to prevent security breaches by working closely with the House of Assembly, civil society organizations, women’s groups, youths, and security agencies across the state. To ensure a smooth electoral process, Osibodu confirmed that arrangements for logistics are in place to guarantee the early arrival of voting materials at each polling unit.
The Ogun State Electoral Commission has also emphasized the need for a high caliber of people with proven track records to join hands in the administration of local governments, with the aim of strengthening democracy at the grassroots level.
Osibodu, however, warned those planning to disrupt the peaceful electoral process to desist or face the wrath of the law. As Nigeria prepares for the local government elections, the Ogun State Electoral Commission’s commitment to credible and transparent polls has been reaffirmed, promising a peaceful and democratic process for all stakeholders.
