Tragic Loss of Talented Ballerina Michaela DePrince
At just 29 years old, celebrated ballerina Michaela DePrince, who overcame unimaginable adversity to achieve success on the global stage, has passed away. According to social media posts on Friday, the talented dancer leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond the world of ballet.
DePrince was a second-soloist with the Boston Ballet, having also danced with the Dutch National Ballet and Dance Theatre of Harlem. Her team paid tribute to her on Instagram and Facebook, saying: “With pain in our hearts, we share the loss of star ballerina Michaela Mabinty DePrince, whose artistry touched countless hearts and whose spirit inspired many, leaving an indelible mark on the world of ballet, and beyond.”
Little is known about the cause of her death, although the Dance Theatre of Harlem confirmed the news and remembered DePrince as an “activist and humanitarian, advocating for children affected by conflict and violence.” Her work with War Child Holland, an organization that provides aid to children in conflict zones, was also recognized.
DePrince’s personal story is one of overcoming incredible challenges. Abandoned by her uncle during the brutal Sierra Leone civil war, she was forced to live in an orphanage, where she struggled with the skin disorder vitiligo. Despite these challenges, she went on to become a celebrated ballerina, with her life story immortalized in a documentary called “First Position.”
In addition to her work on stage and screen, DePrince also used her platform to promote positivity and resilience. She co-hosted the “Dare to Dream” gala, a fundraising event aimed at improving the well-being and mental health of children living in war zones.
DePrince’s appearance in Beyonce’s 2016 film and album “Lemonade” – a project that explored the experiences of African American women – is a testament to her talent and versatility. Her loss will be deeply felt by fans of the arts and those who knew her.
As news of her passing spreads, friends, fans, and colleagues are sharing tributes to the late ballerina, praising her unwavering spirit and the positive impact she had on countless lives.
