Dangote Refinery’s Petrol Distribution Sparks Concerns Over Pricing

As Dangote Refinery prepares to offload its first petrol trucks into the Nigerian market, oil marketers are expressing concerns over the pricing of the product. Ahead of the commencement of the Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) distribution on Sunday, the President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association, PETROAN, Billy Gillis-Harry, and the President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Abubakar Maigandi, have raised concerns that stakeholders in the sector have yet to be informed of the price.

In separate interviews with Media Talk Africa on Saturday, Gillis-Harry and Maigandi emphasized the need for transparency in the pricing of Dangote Refinery’s petrol. Gillis-Harry stated, "We heard rumors that an insider gave a price hint and we said that is where have a problem. We cannot be dealing with business clandestinely. Let the industry know what is going on. This product is made in Nigeria and produced by Dangote. We are very proud of that. So let Nigerians start to have it in their cars at an affordable price."

Maigandi also expressed uncertainty over the pricing of Dangote Refinery’s petrol, saying, "We can’t say the price of Dangote Refinery’s petrol now. When NNPCL starts loading on Sunday, we will know. We are sure that the product will be available. The price for now we are not sure what it will look like."

Meanwhile, sources from the oil and gas sector have claimed that the price of Dangote Refinery’s petrol may be around N766 per liter, which is significantly lower than the current price of N870 per liter from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPCL).

The development has received commendations from Nigerians, including petrol marketers, who are eager to see the new product on the market. However, the uncertainty over pricing has raised concerns among oil marketers, who are calling for transparency in the pricing of Dangote Refinery’s petrol.

As Dangote Refinery begins its first petrol distribution, the Nigerian market is eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new product. With its lower pricing and domestic production, Dangote Refinery’s petrol is expected to have a significant impact on the Nigerian market. However, the uncertainty over pricing has raised concerns among oil marketers, who are calling for transparency in the pricing of the product.
