Typhoon Bebinca Brings Heavy Rain and Strong Winds to China’s Eastern Seaboard

As Typhoon Bebinca approaches China’s heavily populated eastern seaboard, authorities are preparing for heavy rain and strong winds that could cause significant disruptions to daily life. The storm is expected to make landfall along a swath of coastline including the megacity of Shanghai between Sunday night and Monday morning, according to Beijing’s emergency management ministry.

The ministry warned that the storm would bring "heavy to torrential" downpours with "local heavy or extremely heavy rainstorms" between Sunday and Tuesday. Officials held a meeting on Saturday to "research and deploy flood and typhoon control work in key areas" and urged residents to take necessary precautions.

The typhoon’s expected landfall comes during the Mid-Autumn Festival, a public holiday in China, when millions of people will be traveling. The country’s railway operator is expecting passengers to take 74 million trips during the holiday, and authorities are bracing for increased mobility and potential safety risks.

Shanghai municipal authorities have advised residents to "strengthen efforts to guard against harmful effects of the typhoon on high-altitude work, transportation, infrastructure and agriculture." Some flights to and from major airports in Shanghai have been cancelled or rescheduled, and passenger shipping lines will be suspended from Sunday.

The typhoon has already caused destruction in other parts of Asia, including Japan and the Philippines. In Japan, gusts of up to 198 kilometers per hour were recorded, and authorities warned of an increased risk of landslides due to heavy rain. In the Philippines, six people were killed and several more injured as the tropical storm brought strong winds and floods.

China is the world’s biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, and scientists say that climate change is driving extreme weather events like typhoons more frequent and intense. The country is no stranger to typhoon-related disasters, with at least four people killed and 95 injured when a typhoon passed through the southern island of Hainan earlier this month.

As the storm approaches, authorities are urging residents to take necessary precautions and follow evacuation orders if necessary. With millions of people expected to be affected, the impact of Typhoon Bebinca will be significant, and authorities are working to minimize the damage and ensure public safety.
