Ndidi Breaks Okocha’s Assists Record in Premier League
Wilfred Ndidi, the talented Super Eagles midfielder, has achieved a remarkable milestone in the Premier League. On Saturday, he overtook Nigerian legend Austin Jay-Jay Okocha’s assists record, leaving his mark on the prestigious league. Ndidi’s impressive performance saw him register two assists in Leicester City’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace, taking his total to 12 in the Premier League.
The 25-year-old midfielder, traditionally known for his defensive skills, was deployed in an attacking midfield role by manager Steve Cooper. This tactical switch paid off as Ndidi provided the assist for Jamie Vardy and Stephy Mavididi, combining with Vardy to score the first goal of the game. His two assists against Crystal Palace took his haul to 12 in the Premier League, surpassing Okocha’s 10 assists in his career in England.
Okocha, a Nigerian legend, scored 14 goals and provided 10 assists in 125 Premier League games for Bolton Wanderers before leaving the club. While Ndidi has broken Okocha’s record, he still has a long way to go to catch up with Arsenal legend Nwankwo Kanu, who remains the Nigerian player with the most assists in Premier League history with 33. Behind Kanu are Shola Ameobi (31 assists), Alex Iwobi (30 assists), Kelechi Iheanacho (25 assists), Victor Moses (20 assists), Peter Odemwingie (15 assists), and Victor Anichebe (13 assists).
Ndidi’s impressive performance has further solidified his reputation as one of the most talented midfielders in the Premier League. As he continues to excel on the pitch, fans and pundits alike will be eagerly watching to see how he fares in the coming matches.
