A suspected assassin was arrested on Sunday after allegedly attempting to attack former US President Donald Trump at his Florida golf course. The suspect, Ryan Wesley Routh, was identified as a 58-year-old self-employed affordable housing builder from Hawaii. According to reports, Routh was carrying an AK-47 style rifle when US Secret Service agents “opened fire on a gunman” near the boundary of the golf course where Trump was golfing.
The would-be assassin had fled into a nearby shrubbery before escaping in a black car. However, authorities were able to track him down and apprehend him. Routh had previously expressed support for Ukraine’s fight against Russia’s invasion, stating in an X post in March 2022, “I AM WILLING TO FLY TO KRAKOW AND GO TO THE BORDER OF UKRAINE TO VOLUNTEER AND FIGHT AND DIE… Can I be the example We must win.”
This incident comes as President Joe Biden’s term is nearing an end, with Kamala Harris set to replace him next January. The President’s policies of supporting Ukraine are expected to continue under Harris’ leadership. Meanwhile, Trump, a vocal critic of Ukraine, refused to comment on his potential involvement in the conflict during a recent debate, fueling speculation about his potential presidency.
The arrest highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding Ukraine and Russia, which has been a major foreign policy priority for the US administration. As the world grapples with the complex global situation, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the high stakes involved.
