Nigerian Opposition Party Set to Launch Campaign for Local Elections

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State is gearing up for the October 5, 2024 local government elections in the state. According to Senator Ita Enang, the Chairmen of the APC Local Government Campaign and Planning Committee, the party will commence its campaign on September 18 at the Ikot Ekpene Township Stadium.

Enang expressed confidence in APC’s victory, citing President Bola Tinubu’s bold step in granting local government autonomy in the country. He also praised Governor Pastor Umo Eno for promising to maintain a level playing field for all parties during the polls. However, Enang expressed reservations about the fairness of AKISIEC chairman Ikoiwak, citing his antecedents.

The APC chairmen claimed that Akwa Ibom is an APC state, but unfortunately, it is governed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He boasted that the party has quality candidates who are not only ready to win elections but also have the capacity to bring in dividends of democracy, such as tarring of roads, promoting agriculture, and managing local education authorities.

Enang said, "We are confident that the President has taken a bold step in ensuring the autonomy of local governments from state governments, and we are confident that we will win the elections in all 31 LGAs in Akwa Ibom State." He also emphasized that the party wants to display its majority, strength, and capacity in the upcoming local government elections.

The opposition party is critical of the current performance of local governments in Akwa Ibom State, claiming that they have failed to carry out their responsibilities, such as tarring roads, building primary schools, and promoting agriculture. Enang believes that APC candidates will bring about a change and ensure that these responsibilities are carried out.

The APC’s campaign kick-off is expected to be a significant event in the state’s political landscape, with many watching to see how the party’s promises will resonate with voters.
