Nigeria’s Former Governor Yahaya Bello Honours EFCC Invitation After Months of Back-and-Forth

In a significant development, former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, has finally honoured the invitation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after months of resistance and an attempt by the agency to arrest him. According to a statement released by the Director of Bello’s Media Office, Ohiare Michael, the former governor decided to comply with the EFCC’s request after consulting with his family, legal team, and political allies.

Bello’s decision to honour the EFCC’s invitation comes after Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court Abuja adjourned proceedings on the alleged money laundering case instituted by the EFCC against him to September 25. The case involves a 19-count charge of alleged money laundering to the tune of ₦80bn.

In the statement, Bello emphasized his respect for the rule of law and constituted authority, stating that he had only sought the enforcement of his fundamental rights to ensure due process. He also reiterated his commitment to the fight against corruption in Nigeria, citing his establishment of an anti-corruption mechanism during his tenure as Governor of Kogi State.

The former governor was accompanied to the EFCC Headquarters by high-profile Nigerians, and it is hoped that the Commission will respect his fundamental rights as a citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Details of his engagement with the operatives of the Anti-Graft Agency will be disclosed later, according to the statement.

Bello’s decision to honour the EFCC’s invitation marks a significant departure from his previous stance, as he had consistently refused to honour the agency’s invitations for questioning and had boycotted court trials. His willingness to cooperate with the EFCC suggests a desire to clear his name and cooperate with the authorities in their efforts to combat corruption in Nigeria.
