The Sims Movie Confirmed: Electronic Arts Teams Up with Amazon MGM Studios for Big Screen Adaptation

In the latest move to capitalize on the video-game adaptation craze, Electronic Arts has confirmed a movie based on the life-simulation gaming series The Sims. The project is being developed by Amazon MGM Studios, with a release date yet to be announced.

The Sims, originally spun off from the popular SimCity franchise, revolutionized the gaming world by allowing players to customize everything from furniture to virtual relationships within individual homes. Over 25 years, the series has sold over 200 million copies, and Electronic Arts is now planning a multi-player version.

Kate Herron, known for her work on Marvel’s Loki and Netflix’s Sex Education, will direct and co-write the movie. Described as a "virtual doll house," the flexible and open-ended Sims games generally lack specific goals or plotlines, offering a unique canvas for filmmakers.

Details on the film are scarce, but Kate Gorman from Electronic Arts told Variety that the movie will be "very much rooted" in the games’ universe, featuring plenty of "Sims lore." Margot Robbie’s company LuckyChap, which produced the successful Barbie movie, will also be involved in the production.

"We wanted the right partners and to make an impact the size of something like a ‘Barbie’ movie is exactly what we want," said Gorman.

The Sims movie joins a growing list of successful video-game adaptations, including Super Mario Bros, Sonic the Hedgehog, Uncharted, and The Last of Us. With its massive global following and endless possibilities for storytelling, The Sims movie has the potential to be a box office hit.
