Oyo Governor Backs Edo PDP Candidate, Urges Party Unity Ahead of Election

In a move seen as a significant boost to his chances, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has publicly endorsed Asue Ighodalo, the Edo Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate. Makinde made the declaration at the groundbreaking ceremony for the upgrade of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, Ibadan, to international standards.

The governor’s statement comes amid growing concerns within the PDP about unity and party loyalty ahead of Saturday’s governorship election in Edo State. Makinde called on all members of the PDP to rally around the party’s candidate, emphasizing that the party’s success depends on its ability to work together.

"I am 100 per cent with our candidate in Edo State, Asue Ighodalo," Makinde said. "If Edo people want to know the difference between delicious and nutritious, they should vote for Asue Ighodalo for them to get what is nutritious."

Makinde also extended his support to the PDP Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, amid threats to his continued stay as the party’s head. The governor urged other stakeholders to work with Damagum and the National Working Committee (NWC) led by him to ensure the party’s success.

The governor’s endorsement of Ighodalo is seen as a significant development in the Edo governorship election, which has been marked by intense competition and politicking. With the election just days away, Makinde’s statement is likely to have a significant impact on the campaign trail, as it lends credibility to Ighodalo’s candidacy and underscores the importance of party unity.

Makinde’s statement also emphasized the need for the PDP to put aside its internal differences and work together to achieve success. "I don’t think this is the right time, even if we have issues with ourselves, we have an important election on Saturday, so we should all rally around and deliver our candidate," he said.

The governor’s declaration of support for Ighodalo and the PDP’s leadership is seen as a significant boost to the party’s chances in the election, and could potentially swing the pendulum in favor of the party.
