Nigeria’s Vice President to Lead Delegation to UN General Assembly
In a move aimed at addressing the country’s domestic challenges, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead the country’s delegation to the 79th United Nations General Assembly session in New York this year. The decision comes as the country is still reeling from the devastating effects of recent flooding.
According to a statement signed by President Tinubu’s Special Advisor on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Vice President will deliver Nigeria’s national statement to the General Assembly, attend important sideline events, and hold bilateral meetings during the high-level General Debate. The theme of this year’s General Debate is "Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations."
The General Debate will take place from September 24 to 28, 2024, and will feature speeches from world leaders, including Nigeria’s Vice President Shettima. The event provides an opportunity for countries to discuss pressing global issues and work together to find solutions.
President Tinubu’s decision to focus on domestic issues is a response to the recent flooding that has affected many parts of the country. The President returned to Nigeria last Sunday after a trip to China and the United Kingdom, and is expected to prioritize addressing the country’s challenges in the coming weeks.
The Nigerian government’s participation in the UN General Assembly is seen as an important step in promoting the country’s interests on the global stage and strengthening its relationships with other nations.
