Governors at Odds: Osun Governor Adeleke Supports Removing PDP Acting National Chairman

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continues to grapple with its leadership crisis as governors of the party have announced a plan to remove its acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum. At the center of this conflict is Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, who has decided to throw his support behind the resolution made by his fellow PDP governors to replace Damagum.

According to the PDP Governors’ Forum, which comprises governors elected on the PDP platform, the removal of Damagum is necessary to ensure constitutional compliance. The party constitution, they argue, outlines the succession procedure for such cases, and since former national chairman Iyorchia Ayu was ousted in 2022, a North Central member should have taken his place. Damagum’s continuance in office is viewed as a breach of the constitution.

However, this decision has not been welcomed by all PDP governors, with some supporting Damagum’s retention in office. The PDP leadership crisis has further escalated as a result of the differing opinions.

Osun State Governor Adeleke, in a statement released on Thursday by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, voiced his support for the governors’ forum resolution, which he believes is rooted in the party’s constitution.

“I stand by the Constitution of our great party which clearly spelt out the succession procedure in case of the exit of an elected chairman,” Adeleke stated. “Our party must adhere to its Constitution at this critical time and at all times. That is the way to build a responsible political party,” he added.

With party divisions deepening and governors at odds, the outcome of this leadership crisis remains uncertain.
