Flood-Ravaged Maiduguri: NAFDAC Shuts Down Contaminated Drug Market

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken swift action to contain the devastating flood crisis in Maiduguri, Borno State, by shutting down the Gomboru drug market. The market, which was submerged by floodwaters, had been compromised, with contaminated drugs being washed and sun-dried for resale.

The flood, caused by the rupture of the Alau dam on the Ngadda River, has claimed at least 30 lives and forced over 400,000 people from their homes. National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) spokesman Ezekiel Manzo described the situation as "frightening," with thousands of homes swept away by the overflowing dam. According to NEMA, more than 23,000 households and upwards of 150,000 people were affected by the subsequent rapid rise of waters.

The severity of the flooding has also led to chaos at the Maiduguri Medium Security Custodial Centre, where at least 286 inmates have reportedly escaped. Moreover, NEMA reported that about 80 per cent of animals in the local zoo have died, while 20 per cent have escaped into the metropolis.

NAFDAC’s decision to shut down the drug market is a critical step in ensuring the safety and well-being of the affected population. The agency has ordered a thorough shop-to-shop removal of the compromised drugs to prevent any further harm.

As the city struggles to recover from the devastating flood, it is essential to prioritize the health and safety of the residents. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, and efforts are underway to provide aid and support to those affected.

The flood crisis in Maiduguri serves as a stark reminder of the importance of disaster preparedness and emergency response. As the situation continues to unfold, it is crucial to stay informed and support those affected by this tragedy.
