Yobe State Assembly Calls for Construction of Earth Dams to Aid Farmers

The Yobe State House of Assembly has issued a urgent call to the executive arm of government to construct more earth dams to harness abundant rainwater for irrigation farming. This move is aimed at helping farmers reduce the hardships they face as a result of frequent floods that have ravaged their farm lands and properties worth millions of naira.

Honorable Bukar Mustapha, representing Bade West and Hon. Sanda Kara Bade, representing Geidam Central, initiated the motion of urgent public importance. The assembly members, in their speeches, emphasized the significance of constructing the dams in supporting irrigation farming. This initiative is expected to ease the hardships faced by farmers and minimize losses incurred as a result of flooding.

In related news, the House received a report from its standing committee on works regarding the performance of the ministry of works and its agencies during the first and second quarter of 2024. Hon. Adamu Dala Dogo, chairman of the committee, presented the report, which included the outcome of the committee’s oversight visits to construction sites to ensure the quality of projects being executed. Dogo called on the ministry to task contractors who have completed projects to repair potholes on the roads before being paid their retention fees.

The speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Chiroma Buba Mashio, praised the committee for a job well done and encouraged members to study the report carefully, considering it for potential adoption in the next legislative session.

The decision to construct more earth dams in Yobe State reflects the assembly’s commitment to finding innovative solutions to alleviate the challenges faced by farmers. With this move, the state hopes to not only enhance food security but also contribute to the economic development of the region.
