Music Unites: The 500 City Choir’s Journey to Global Success
Shallom Matthew, the founder and director of The 500 City Choir, has revealed the motivations behind the formation of his group. In an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Matthew emphasized the importance of community in music, stating, "I believe in the power of community; it’s not everybody that will blow. We just have this vision of building a community where people come to learn."
Matthew shared how he started teaching voice training classes, but was not fulfilled. It wasn’t until he heard a clear message from God to start a community choir that he began The 500 City Choir. Since its inception in August 2023, the choir has grown rapidly, boasting over 500 members.
Discipline is key to the choir’s success, according to Matthew. He explained how they adapt to different genres and modify songs to suit various audiences, making their music appealing to a diverse range of people.
The 500 City Choir has gained international recognition, with their viral performance of "Satan, The Number You Are Calling Is Not Available" amassing over 3.6 million views on TikTok. The performance, inspired by the Augustine Catholic NAF Base Ikeja Lagos Catholic Women Organisation (CWO) and Zumuntan Mata, features a unique blend of traditional and contemporary elements.
Another notable performance is their rendition of "Hallelujah," which has captivated audiences with its powerful and harmonious delivery. The choir’s ability to infuse traditional songs with modern twists has made them a favourite among various age groups, including Gen Z.
Matthew’s vision for The 500 City Choir is to reach different kinds of people through their music, believing that everyone can relate to their message. With over 500 members and numerous achievements, the choir continues to inspire and unite people through the power of music.
