Labour Party Seeks Revitalization Amid Challenges
In a bid to revitalize the Labour Party as a viable alternative for the Nigerian populace, Senator Nenadi Esther Usman, the newly appointed Chairman of the Labour Party National Caretaker Committee, has expressed her determination to transform the party. This comes as the party faces current challenges, including economic crisis, security issues, and rising hunger.
At the inaugural meeting of the committee in Abuja on Friday, Senator Nenadi emphasized the importance of dedication and integrity among committee members, stressing that their work is crucial for both the party and the nation. She described the committee’s mission as a "rescue mission" for the Labour Party and Nigeria, highlighting the significant responsibility that comes with it.
Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, echoed these sentiments, expressing confidence that the party would build on its successes in the 2023 elections to secure a majority in the National Assembly and win the presidential election in 2027. He attributed the party’s ability to navigate challenges during its transition to its strong foundation and commitment to its values.
Baba-Ahmed also highlighted the nation’s current state, citing mismanagement of resources, security issues, and rising hunger as major concerns. He attributed these failures to careless governance that followed the Labour Party’s electoral victories.
Ikechukwu Emetu, the deputy governor of Abia State, who represented Governor Alex Otti, urged committee members to focus on the Labour Party’s growth and avoid actions that could harm its interests. Senator Darlington Nwokocha, the committee’s secretary, assured that the committee members would work diligently to elect officers at various party levels within their time frame, committing to a thorough outreach and consultation process to ensure capable leaders are elected from the grassroots up to the national convention.
With this renewed commitment, the Labour Party aims to emerge as a platform for all Nigerians who feel disenfranchised or dissatisfied with the current state of affairs.
