Election Tensions Rise in Nigeria as INEC Warns Against Disruption

Tensions are running high in Nigeria’s Edo State as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a stern warning to political actors to refrain from disrupting the collation of gubernatorial election results. The warning comes as reports of rising tensions and protests at INEC’s headquarters have emerged following the conclusion of the elections on Saturday.

INEC’s National Commissioner, Mohammed Haruna, condemned the actions of some political figures, describing them as inappropriate and unacceptable. In a statement on Sunday, Haruna emphasized that the collation process would proceed as scheduled, in full compliance with the Electoral Act 2022.

The collation of results from polling units and wards is already underway, with results successfully uploaded for review. However, Haruna expressed concern over a recent incident involving threats to INEC’s office in Okpoba Okha Local Government Area, which caused a stampede and injured one official.

Haruna also criticized demonstrations by political actors at INEC’s state headquarters, stating that such actions were uncalled for and that nobody should disrupt the process at any stage. "We are similarly disturbed by the overnight presence and demonstrations by some political actors and their supporters at our State Head Office ahead of the commencement of the final collation. These actions are uncalled for. Nobody should disrupt the process at any stage, and no one will be allowed to benefit from lawlessness," Haruna stated.

To address any complaints during the collation process, INEC has mechanisms in place, including the power to review results declared under duress. Haruna assured that accredited party agents, observers, and the media would have unimpeded access to all collation centers and called on security agencies to maintain their professionalism in securing the finalization of the results.

With the election process nearing its conclusion, INEC’s warning serves as a timely reminder of the importance of maintaining peace and order in the electoral process. The commission’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the election and ensuring the participation of all stakeholders is crucial in promoting democracy and accountability in Nigeria.
