Edo State’s APC candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has claimed victory in the state’s gubernatorial election, which took place on Saturday. The Independent National Electoral Commission declared Okpebholo the winner, garnering 291,667 votes, ahead of Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party, who secured 247,274 votes, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party, who received 22,763 votes.
The outcome has been hailed by Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, as a “landslide victory” for the All Progressives Congress (APC). In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Sanwo-Olu praised the people of Edo State for rejecting the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and choosing the APC candidate.
Sanwo-Olu commended Senator Okpebholo for his victory, emphasizing that the people of Edo State have sent a “strong message” by sacking the PDP and voting for the APC. He urged the Governor-elect to ensure that his victory serves all citizens of Edo State, regardless of political, social, or ethnic affiliations.
“I congratulate Edo State APC governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for emerging victorious in Saturday’s gubernatorial election,” Sanwo-Olu said. “The landslide victory of Senator Okpebholo and the ruling party showed that Edo people know what is right, and they have done what is right by sacking the PDP and voting for the APC.”
Sanwo-Olu also expressed confidence that the APC administration in Edo would surpass the expectations of the electorate, bringing a “breath of fresh air” to the state.
In addition to congratulating the Governor-elect, Sanwo-Olu commended President Bola Tinubu for fostering a level playing field during the election, as well as the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in conducting a fair and transparent process. Tinubu had earlier congratulated Okpebholo and the APC on their victory.
Sanwo-Olu also thanked key APC figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, and members of the Governor Bassey Ottu-led National Campaign Council, for their efforts in securing the party’s victory in Edo State.
