Time Change Reminder: What You Need to Know

As the days grow shorter and the weather cools down, it’s time to "fall back" and switch to standard time. Daylight Saving Time (DST) is coming to an end, and it’s almost time to set our clocks back an hour. But what does this mean for you, and why do we change our clocks to begin with?

DST is an attempt to make use of "extra" daylight during the evenings in warmer months. By shifting the clock in the summer, we can make the most of the longer days. However, in the colder months, when there’s no "extra" daylight to be conserved, we return to standard time, which re-aligns our wake-up times with the sunrise.

If you’re in the U.S., you’ll probably have to participate in DST, but you might be an exception if you live in Hawaii, U.S. island territories, or Arizona (excluding Navajo Nation). In these areas, the concept of Daylight Saving Time is less useful or not applicable.

So, what does the time change mean practically? When we set our clocks back, mornings will feel brighter, but the dark will suddenly set in much earlier. You’ll gain an extra hour of sleep on Saturday night, which might help you feel more rested on Sunday. You might even feel like a night owl that first evening, having dinner under the stars instead of at twilight.

If you have an old grandfather clock, you can experience the time change as it happens by setting your clock back to 1 a.m. at 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, November 3, 2024. Alternatively, you can set your clock back an hour before bed on Saturday, November 2.

Remember, DST will technically end on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at 2 a.m. local time. Your smartphone will likely change itself, but if you want to manually change your clock, wait until 2 a.m. and set it back to 1 a.m.
