EU Supports Flood-Affected Countries in Sahel Region with €5.4M

EU Provides 5.4 Million Euros in Flood Relief to Nigeria and Five Other Sahel Countries

The European Union has announced a significant financial injection to support Nigeria and five other Sahel countries affected by devastating floods. The bloc has allocated 5.4 million Euros to assist the countries in providing relief to the millions of people affected by the disaster.

The funding will be distributed among Chad, Niger, Cameroon, Mali, and Burkina Faso, with each country receiving a specific amount. Chad will receive one million Euros, Niger 1.350 million Euros, Nigeria 1.1 million Euros, Mali one million Euros, Cameroon 650,000 Euros, and Burkina Faso 300,000 Euros.

The EU’s humanitarian partners will use the funding to provide immediate aid and respond to the most urgent needs in the hardest-hit areas. This includes providing food, shelter, access to clean water and sanitation, and other essential services.

The floods have had a catastrophic impact on the affected countries, destroying homes, public health facilities, water systems, schools, and sanitation facilities. The lack of access to water, hygiene, and sanitation services has increased the risk of spreading waterborne diseases.

EU Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenar
i
, emphasized the bloc’s commitment to helping the most vulnerable in the flood-stricken countries. “Excessive rainfalls had lashed the Sahel and Lake Chad regions with unprecedented impact, displacing millions and causing widespread suffering and damage. We are mobilising all means at our disposal to help the most vulnerable in the flood-stricken countries, so they can receive much needed relief.”

This funding comes in addition to the 232 million Euros in humanitarian assistance already allocated to these countries this year. The EU and its partners have already responded to the immediate consequences of floods in Liberia, Guinea, Chad, Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon, and Mali.

The EU’s timely intervention will undoubtedly provide a lifeline to those affected by the floods, helping to alleviate their suffering and support their recovery.
