Tanzania Pushes for Clean Cooking at UN Summit

Tanzania Takes Center Stage at UN Summit, Highlighting Clean Cooking Initiative

As the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA79) kicked off in New York, Tanzania’s Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa represented President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan at the opening ceremony, marking a crucial milestone in the global effort to accelerate progress towards the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The East African nation is set to raise awareness about its clean cooking initiative, a transformative strategy aimed at reducing carbon emissions and protecting the environment.

Tanzania’s clean cooking energy strategy, launched in May, is a ten-year plan that aims to increase clean cooking energy usage from the current 10% to 80% by 2034. The initiative is expected to cost 4.6 trillion Tanzanian shillings and is seen as a vital step towards climate change mitigation and inclusive sustainable development in Africa.

At the summit, Prime Minister Majaliwa is expected to highlight Tanzania’s efforts in reducing carbon emissions and protecting the environment through the adoption of clean cooking practices. The country’s clean cooking initiative aligns with the government’s economic diplomacy, which is crucial for fostering bilateral partnerships with other nations to invest in renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power.

The transition to clean cooking energy involves replacing unclean sources like firewood and charcoal with eco-friendly alternatives like gas and electricity. This shift is essential for protecting the ozone layer from the adverse effects of unclean cooking energy sources, according to International Relations Analyst Mr. Medard Wilfred.

Tanzania’s clean cooking initiative has already gained international recognition, with President Dr. Samia launching the Africa Women Clean Cooking Support Programme (AWCCSP) during COP28 in Dubai. The program aims to promote clean cooking across the continent, emphasizing the importance of clean cooking energy for climate change mitigation and inclusive sustainable development.

As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change, Tanzania’s commitment to clean cooking is a beacon of hope. The country’s efforts to transition to clean cooking energy will not only reduce its carbon footprint but also contribute to a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future for its citizens and the global community.

With the UN General Assembly providing a platform for nations to come together and address global challenges, Tanzania’s clean cooking initiative is poised to make a significant impact on the international stage. As the country continues to push forward with its clean cooking strategy, it is clear that the world is taking notice of its tireless efforts to transition to a cleaner, more sustainable future.
