Nigeria’s Democracy on the Brink: Former PDP Chairman Warns of Election Woes
Prince Uche Secondus, a former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has sounded the alarm over the state of Nigeria’s democracy, warning that the 2027 elections may never come to fruition. In a statement signed by his Media Adviser, Ike Abonyi, Secondus accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of orchestrating a plan to ground Nigeria through misgovernance.
Secondus’ concerns stem from Saturday’s governorship election in Edo State, which he described as "electoral fraud" conducted with no regard for the rule of law or respect for voters. He noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had shown no remorse for its role in the 2023 election, which was marred by irregularities.
The former PDP chairman also highlighted the shameful boast by APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje that the party would apply the Edo template in upcoming off-cycle elections in Ondo and Anambra States. This, he claimed, would lead to a one-party state and the silencing of the opposition.
Secondus believes that the beauty of democracy lies in opposing voices, but the APC is committed to ruining Nigeria through misrule and will not tolerate dissenting views. Nigeria’s democracy, he warns, is teetering on the edge due to election rigging, making it difficult to conduct future elections.
The manipulation of the Edo election, he alleged, was blatant, involving the harassment and arrest of opposition leaders and the compromise of key players, including security agencies and electoral officials. The world, he said, is watching the "disgrace" Nigeria is inflicting on its democratic system, which other nations use to stabilize and develop their countries.
Secondus’ warning comes as Nigeria navigates a critical period in its democratic journey, and his words serve as a stark reminder of the dangers of electoral manipulation and political repression.
