Elon Musk is among the many parties poised to submit a formal bid for Manchester United as the deadline approaches. According to the Daily Mail, the tech billionaire is closely monitoring the situation and wondering whether an opportunity at Old Trafford might be slipping by. The Red Devils were placed on the market by their owners, the Glazer family, last November, and formal offers must be submitted by Friday for The Raine Group, the bank overseeing the transaction, to assess.

Musk, the second‑richest man in the world according to Forbes, has an enormous net worth of £157 billion. United’s American owners reportedly wanted to sell the club for between £6 billion and £8 billion, but some reports suggest a bid of up to £4.5 billion could be sufficient to acquire it. If Musk decides to move forward, he will face stiff competition from Saudi Arabian and Qatari investors, as well as Britain’s richest man and INEOS chief executive Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who announced in January that he is attempting to take control of the club he supports.

Musk first expressed interest in purchasing Manchester United in August 2022, posting, “Also, I’m buying Manchester United ur welcome.” He later clarified that the comment was a joke, adding, “Although, if it were any team, it would be Man U. They were my fav team as a kid.” Last month, Guinness World Records noted that Musk broke the record for the largest loss of personal fortune in history, with an approximate drop of £150 billion since November, largely due to Tesla’s poor stock performance. Nevertheless, with the Glazers seeking around £6 billion and some valuations placing the club at about £4.5 billion, the price is within reach for the Twitter owner. A purchase price of £3.76 billion would make United the most expensive sports team in the world.
