Iran’s Supreme Leader Downplays Impact of Israeli Attacks on Hezbollah

Iran’s religious leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has reassured the public that the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah is far from defeated, despite the recent killing of high-ranking commanders in Israeli attacks. Speaking at a veterans’ event in Tehran on Wednesday, the 85-year-old Khamenei emphasized that while the loss was significant, it would not bring about the defeat of the powerful militia.

"We’ve had a loss, no doubt about it," Khamenei said. "But it’s not a loss that would bring about Hezbollah’s defeat." He went on to praise Hezbollah’s organisational and human strength, stating that these were far greater than those of the Israeli regime.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also chimed in, warning against underestimating the capabilities of Hezbollah. "It is more than capable of destroying the bases and colonies of the Israeli regime," he wrote on the X platform.

The assessment comes as Iran’s new government, led by President Masoud Pezeshkian, struggles to cope with a severe economic crisis. The administration is attempting to re-establish ties with the West, a move that has been met with skepticism by some.

So far, the military and political leadership in Tehran has only made threats against Israel and the West, without taking any direct action. Observers believe that Iran is unlikely to rush to Hezbollah’s aid in the event of a war between it and Israel, due to the country’s own pressing domestic issues.

The continued support from Iran’s religious leader and top officials has likely boosted morale within Hezbollah’s ranks. Despite the challenges ahead, the militia remains a key player in the Middle East, and its alliance with Iran continues to shape the regional political landscape.
